Thermometers

A thermometer is a measuring device that shows body temperature as a number; there are models that measure from the ear, from the forehead or by contact.

About thermometers

A thermometer has one job: to give you the right number quickly. What to do with that number is for you and your doctor to decide. That is why a good thermometer does two things well: it measures consistently, and it gives a result without disturbing your baby.

Weewell thermometers offer three ways to measure. Non-contact models measure from a few centimetres away from the forehead, so you get a result without touching your baby, even while they sleep. The ear thermometer reads the infrared radiation given off by the eardrum and gives a result within seconds. Contact digital models, with their flexible tips, make the classic measurement more comfortable.

Most models have a measurement memory; being able to see earlier readings makes it easy to follow how things change during the day. On some models the screen colour changes with the reading, so you can understand the result at a glance. These colours are for information only and are not a medical assessment.

Consistent readings depend on the method as much as on the device. Measuring at the same spot under the same conditions makes your results comparable.

Choosing a thermometer

Your baby's age and sleep pattern
If you often expect to measure while your baby sleeps, a non-contact model is practical because it gives a result without touching. Ear measurement is fast and easy for everyday tracking.
Measurement memory
If you measure several times a day, a model with memory keeps the earlier readings, so you don't need to take notes.
Night-time use
A backlit screen or projection feature lets you read the result in the dark without switching on the light.
Extra measurement modes
Some models also measure surface and room temperature. One device is then enough for everyday checks such as bottle water or bath water.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use my thermometer correctly?
Before measuring, leave the device for a while at the temperature of the room it is in. Measure as described in the manual, then repeat the measurement twice in a row and compare the results; this is how you get the most reliable reading.
How do I make my readings consistent?
The result depends on the measuring distance, the forehead being dry and clear of hair, and the device having rested for a while at the temperature of the room it is in. If you always repeat the measurement at the same spot, your readings become comparable with each other.
What do the colours on the screen mean?
The colours show which of the ranges defined in the device the measured value falls into; they are there to make the reading easier. They are not a diagnosis or a recommendation. Please take any questions about how to interpret the result to your paediatrician.
